An American actor, producer, civil rights activist, and politician. He served as a U.S. Senator for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 1997. Jackson was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and after graduating from high school in 1959, he turned down a contract from a professional baseball team so he could attend the University of Illinois on a scholarship. After his second semester in his predominantly white college class, he moved to North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where he was elected student body president and became active in local civil rights protests. He graduated with a BA in sociology in 1964, then attended Chicago Theological Seminary on a scholarship, dropping out in 1966 to focus on the civil rights movement. Jackson has made several films, including Wannabe: The Peter Putrid Story (2003) and S.O.S. - Saving Our Schools (2015).
