An American screenwriter, film critic, and journalist, born in New York State, USA. He is best known for his collaboration with director John Ford after beginning his career as a film critic for The New York Times. He was prolific and became known for his reviews of popular films. Producer Darryl Zanuck noticed his writing and decided to hire him as a screenwriter. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1953, won the Writers Guild of America Award twice for Best Screenplay, and is best known for writing the film The Searchers in 1956. |
