An English-American actress, born on January 2, 1913, in Kent, England, United Kingdom. Her father, a rector, encouraged her to become an actress, and she trained at the Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art at the Royal Albert Hall. She began appearing in English films at the age of 19 and played a number of minor roles, after which she moved to Hollywood and collaborated with director John Ford in films such as Fort Apache (1948). She is best known for The Sound of Music (1965), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), General Hospital (1979-2018), and Bedlam (1946). She died on May 14, 2004, in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA.
