An American director, born in Tokyo. He is an Academy Award and Emmy Award winner. He is best known for the 1968 film Planet of the Apes, which was based on the 1962 French novel by Pierre Boulle. Schaffner began his career directing for television, starting in the late 1940s and continuing through the mid-1960s, and was a pioneer in the use of the moving camera in television production. He later turned to film directing, and although he only directed a few films, he is considered one of the founders of modern cinema. His most notable works include Patton, for which he won an Academy Award, Babylon in 1973, and Islands in the Stream in 1977.
