An American writer, he was born in the United States and grew up on a farm in Independence, Missouri. He met Harry Truman, the future president of the United States, while working in a pharmacy as a teenager. Truman encouraged him to pursue a career in law. His goal was to become a radio singer, even though he went to law school in Kansas. Later, he stopped singing and started writing. Among his artistic works are The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show (1950-1952), The Dennis Day Show (1953-1954), and Lover Come Back (1961), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenwriting, and he followed it with the movie Bedtime Story (1964).
