He joined the Shakespeare Drama Festival in Southern California at the age of fifteen, then spent two years of military service in Japan, where he worked in the Armed Forces Radio. After his discharge, he went to Fort Wayne, in Indiana, and worked as a radio broadcaster and worked in the local theater during his long artistic life, which spanned five decades.
