An American actor, born in Dracott, Massachusetts, USA. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his work on television. He married Alice Nevin Wiley and they had 4 children. Among his credits are Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), The Search (1948), Rear Window (1954), and Harbor Command (1957). He played the toiling American character in films and television series in the forties, fifties and sixties.
He first appeared on Broadway in 1942 and played supporting roles in many plays, and in the mid-40s, he signed with Paramount and made his film debut with Desert Fury (1947). He was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, president of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Santa Monica City Council. He died of liver ailment on November 8, 1968 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA.
