American director, born in London, England, immigrated to the United States. He started acting and directing on Broadway in the US. He visited Hollywood while attending New York University to study the arts, where he was hired as a dialogue coach and assistant director at Warner Bros. He made his directorial debut with the film Shining Victory (1941). He then continued directing films such as The Corn Is Green (1945), The Voice of the Turtle (1947), and Marjorie Morningstar (1958).
