An American actress, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA as Mary Dorothy Maloney. She won an Academy Award in 1957, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, a Golden Apple Award in 1965, and was awarded the Photoplay Award for Most Popular Female Star in 1966. She studied at Highland Park High School, then she studied at Southern Methodist University in Dallas to become a nurse, but she was spotted by a talent scout, while acting in a play in college. She was signed by RKO at age 18, and made her film debut in Gildersleeve on Broadway (1943). Among her notable credits are The Big Sleep (1946), Written on the Wind (1956), and Basic Instinct (1992). She died on January 19, 2018, aged 93. |
