After many films, he held the position of President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1977 to 1979, and in 1990 the Academy honored him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. In 1991, he received the Frank Capra Achievement Award from the Directors Guild of America. He died in Beverly Hills in the United States.
