A British writer born in Coventry, England, United Kingdom. He later relocated to Birmingham, England's Handsworth Wood neighborhood. Despite having no desire to practice law, he enrolled in the University of Sheffield's Faculty of Law in Britain in 1974. He worked in theater backstage throughout his time as a student, and after graduation, he became a presenting director at Manchester's Granada Television, which is a member of the UK's ITV Network. Between 1977 and 1995, he wrote hundreds of news articles, stories, and ads in addition to participating in the transmission of over 4,000 hours of programming while working in the television industry. Upon quitting his television career, he made the decision to begin writing novels. Following the publication of his debut book, Killing Floor, in 1997, he received his first honorary award, the Anthony Award for Best First Novel. His books are well-known for the American soldier Reacher character.
