An American actress, born in New York State, USA, to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother, she grew up in the South Bronx, New York City. She attended art school there, and at the age of thirteen, her family moved to Homestead, Florida. She graduated from South Dade High School and studied at the University of Miami on a scholarship, majoring in psychology. After graduating, she went on to graduate school in theater and fine arts at Southern Methodist University, where she earned a master's degree. Her artistic works include Beat Street (1984), To Sir, with Love II (1996), Garmento (2002), and The House That Jack Built (2013).
