A Canadian writer, born in Wigham, Ontario, Canada. She studied English at Western University in Ontario. She got married to James Munro in 1951 and then moved to Victoria in 1963. Her stories deal with themes of love, conflict, and life in the countryside. She won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013 and is the first Canadian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She began writing when she was a housewife and mother of three young daughters. Back then, she wrote short stories due to the lack of time available for the novel, and she was influenced by many famous writers. She co-founded with James Munro of the Munro Books in Victoria, British Columbia, and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 by the Governor General of Canada, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 by the Governor General of Canada, and was featured on a Canadian permanent commemorative stamp issued on July 10, 2015.
