An Australian-British writer, born in Queensland. Before attending boarding school in Sydney, Australia, she grew up in the Australian bush. She is best known for the Mary Poppins series of children's books. It was during her teenage years that she first published her work. She also had a brief career in theater. She immigrated to England at the age of 25, where she assumed the name Pamela Lyndon Travers. In 1933, she took on the name P. L. Travers. During World War II, she went to New York, and while working at the British Ministry of Information, she made an agreement with the Walt Disney Company to acquire the character's rights. Years later, the first staging of Mary Poppins took place in 1964, then a musical based on the books debuted in 2004, and finally, in 2006, the first viewing of the movie in American Broadway theaters.
