An American writer and producer, born in Newark, New Jersey, USA. His father was a Russian immigrant and became a pharmacist after he emigrated, while his mother was a teacher. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles. He majored in English, and after graduation, he joined a training program affiliated with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where he met Harriet Frank Jr., whom he married in 1946. In 1947, he wrote his first film Living in a Big Way. Among his credits are Murphy's Romance (1985) and Stanley & Iris (1990). He died on September 19, 2010.
