An American screenwriter and film critic, he was born in New York. After completing his journalism studies at Amherst College, he worked as a Newsweek magazine film critic from 1967 to 1975. Among his writing credits are Lovers and Liars (1979), The King of Comedy (1982), and Consuming Passions (1988).
