    American playwright and director, born on September 23, 1954 in Frankfort, United States to an African-American family. His mother was a teacher and his mother, a government clerk. He attended a black public school (Rosenwald School). After his family moved, he began attending integrated Frankfort public schools. He attended Frankfort High School where he began pursuing his interest in the theater arts, writing poetry and prose for the school's literary magazine. After high school, he enrolled at Kentucky State University, a historically black college and alma mater. After his freshman year, he transferred to Pomona College in Claremont, California, where he earned a bachelor's degree in theater. Wolf taught for several years in Los Angeles at the inner-city cultural center. He moved to the East Coast and taught in New York City. In 1983, he earned an MFA in dramatic writing and musical theater from New York University (NYU). He won the 1989 Drama Logue Award for Outstanding Directing for Spunk at the Mark Taper Forum Theater in Los Angeles, California. In 1994, he won the New York Drama Desk Award for Best Direction for "Angels in America: Part Two: Perestroika" on Broadway in New York City. In 1993, he won the New York Drama Desk Award for Best Direction for "Angels in America: Part One: Millennium Approaches" on Broadway in New York City.
