Austrian singer and actress, born in Vienna. In 1914, she went to Zurich, Switzerland, to study classic dancing, singing, and acting. She moved to Berlin in 1921 and met the musician Kurt Weil there in 1924 and they got married in 1926. She ran away to the United States in 1933, when Nazism rose in Germany. She won a Tony Award for her role in The Threepenny Opera in 1956. Her most important works include From Russia with Love (1963), Ten Blocks on the Camino Real (1966), Semi-Tough (1977), and The Appointment (1969).
