A Polish film director, who studied painting at Kraków's Academy of Fine Arts, before specializing in cinema at the Łódź Film School. Among his credits are A Generation (1955), Kanal (1957), and Ashes and Diamonds (1958). His film Man of Iron (1981) won the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival. He died on October 9, 2016.
