A Czech screenwriter, director and actor, born in Prague, Czechia. He became a member of the Czech New Wave. Among his notable work is Closely Watched Trains (1966), for which he received many accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He was a member of the Official Competition jury at the 19th Moscow International Film Festival in 1995. He died on September 5, 2020. |
