An American director, actor, and screenwriter, born in Massachusetts, United States. He was a pioneer in low-budget independent cinema. In 1982, he directed the film White Dog, in which he raised the issue of racism in all its ugliness. Among his credits are Hell and High Water, Shock Corridor, and The Steel Helmet. He won awards at festivals, including Venice and Locarno. He died on October 30, 1997 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, United States.
