An American actress, born in Omaha, Nebraska, United States She began her career in the 1940s, and was educated at the University of California. She made her first appearance on Broadway in 1943, then moved to Britain in 1944, and worked at the Old Vic Theater and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Then she returned to the United States in 1975, and continued her theatrical work on Broadway. Among the awards she received: the BAFTA Film Award, an honorary C.B.E., and the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 1965. Among her credits are Orders to Kill, Deathtrap, and King Lear. She died on March 9, 2002.
