Spanish novelist and director, born in Valencia, Spain. He achieved international fame thanks to his novels dealing with World War I. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1916) is the most famous of his novels and has been adapted into a number of films. He was a major supporter of the Allies in World War II. He was also an honorary member of the French army. He died in Menton, France.
