An American writer and poet, born in Waukegan, United States. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Arts, a Master of Fine Arts, and a doctorate from Cornell University. She taught English at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was a writer-in-residence at Washington University, and later became a staff writer at The New Yorker from 1988 to 1994. She's known for The Zookeeper's Wife (2017).
