A Lithuanian actress, born in Šilutė, Lithuania, as Gerlind Cornell Borchers. She won the BAFTA Award in 1955 for the movie The Divided Heart (1954). Among her other most important works are The Big Lift (1950), Never Say Goodbye (1956), and Istanbul (1957). She was married to producer and director Anton Schelkopf and had two children. After their separation, she married Bruce Cunningham, with whom she had a child before their separation.
Cornell was a tall, blonde, blue-eyed girl. She studied medicine before turning to acting, as she studied drama in 1947 and made some German films before being signed for 7 years by 20th Century Fox. She resided in Hollywood, specialized in romantic roles, and appeared in German crime dramas.
After reaching the peak of her career, she returned to Germany and retired from acting in 1959, devoting herself to taking care of her family and living in isolation, away from the limelight. She died on May 12, 2014, in Germany.
