An American author, born in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. He obtained a doctorate in English literature from Boston University, before publishing his first novel in 1973. He won several awards, including the Edgar Award for Best Novel. He created police characters, including Jesse Stone, and wrote about forty novels about private detective Spencer in Boston, who turned into a television character. His credits include Appaloosa (2008) and Jesse Stone: Night Passage (2006). He died on January 18, 2010.
