A British director and cinematographer. Throughout his creative career, he made contributions to the advancement of cinema, from talkies and color flicks to silent films. In the photography category, he took home the 1948 Oscar for Black Narcissus (1947), which was directed by Michael Powell. In addition, the British director received two Oscar nominations for Fanny (1961) and War and Peace (1956) in the cinematography category. Sons and Lovers (1960), which was based on a D. H. Lawrence novel, earned him another Oscar nomination for Best Director. He died on April 22, 2009. |
