A British director and cinematographer who, throughout his career, made contributions to the advancement of cinema, from talkies and color flicks to silent films. In the cinematography category, he took home the 1948 Oscar for Black Narcissus (1947). In addition, he received two Oscar nominations for Fanny (1961) and War and Peace (1956) in the cinematography category. Sons and Lovers (1960), which was based on a D. H. Lawrence novel, earned him another Oscar nomination for Best Director. He died on April 22, 2009.
