An American actor, born in Greenville, South Carolina, on June 4, 1912. Jess Barker was a Hollywood star of B-movies during the 1940s and 1950s and was introduced by producer Walter Wanger in the mid-1930s in a supporting role in The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1936). After a hiatus for several years, he returned in the movie Good Luck, Mr. Yates (1943) playing the titular role. In 1944, Barker married actress Susan Hayward. Their marriage lasted 10 years, during which they had twins, but it ended in divorce, followed by a dispute over custody of the twins, which Hayward won in 1956. These personal problems affected his film career, after which he worked for some time on the radio and television. His most notable work includes Cover Girl (1944), Scarlet Street (1945), and Reign of Terror (1949). He died in North Hollywood, California, on August 8, 2000.
