An Indian producer and director, he is famous for his collaboration with American director James Ivory. The duo presented more than forty films together over the course of more than four decades. Among their most notable works are: The Europeans in 1979, Boston in 1982, and The Golden Bowl in 2000. They also presented the screenplay for a film adapted from the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro entitled The Remains of the Day in 1993, starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. Born Noor Mohammed Abdul Rahman to a middle-class family in Bombay, India, Merchant studied business administration in the United States and earned a master's degree. He began his career with the Oscar-nominated The Creation of Woman (1961). He met James Ivory at the Cannes Film Festival. The duo made several films set in India, including The Householder (1963) and Shakespeare Wallah (1965), a love story set in newly independent India. In the 1970s, the duo moved to the United States and made two films, The Wild Party (1974) and The Europeans (1979). In the 1980s and 1990s, Merchant and Ivory made films such as Heat and Dust (1983), A Room with a View (1985), Howard's End (1992), and The Remains of the Day) in 1993. These films received numerous awards and nominations, including Academy Awards and British Academy Film Awards.
