He was a contemporary of silent cinema, then talkies, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director five times, including three nominations in one year. He was nominated for the award in 1930 for the films Drag and Weary River, in addition to the film The Divine Lady, for which he won the award. The second win was in 1934 for the film Cavalcade. He died in Santa Monica, California, in the United States.
