Slovak actor, born in Slovakia on October 13, 1912. He was born to a Jewish family, and immigrated with his family to New York City at the age of eight. He finished primary school in college New York City, then joined Townsend Harris High School for the Gifted, to graduate from...Read more it at the age of 14 and join the City University of New York. He received a scholarship in medical school, but he refused it for the sake of theater. He joined several jobs before entering the film field, he appeared in several productions on Broadway until he played a role in the play Romeo and Juliet in 1940. That later led to a contract with Warner Bros. He was interested in establishing his own production company, with the aim of directing his films. He produced and directed the 1965 movie The Naked Prey, which brought him fame as a director. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for A song to Remember in 1945. He also won a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his film work. He got married twice and had two children. His most important works include: Sword of Lancelot (1963), Shark's Treasure (1975), Leave Her to Heaven (1945), and No Blade of Grass (1970). He died on October 16, 1986 in Los Angeles, of leukemia.
