British actor, director, and producer, born in the United Kingdom. He was educated at Bridgnorth Grammar School. He intended to train as a doctor but failed to pass the necessary examinations, so he turned to theater and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. At the onset of World War I, the British Army conscripted him as an officer, making him one of the final members of the British Expeditionary Force to depart from France. He began his artistic career in 1913 and resumed his acting career after serving in the British Army in World War I. He performed many classic roles on stage, won a Tony Award for the play, and appeared in London cinemas. He appeared in The Unknown (1964), The Pumpkin Eater (1964), Baby Face Nelson (1957) and Diane (1956). He died on August 6, 1964, in New York, USA, due to pulmonary emphysema.
