English actress, born in London, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of an art critic. After commencing her career in 1917, she gained recognition for her parts in several Alfred Hitchcock productions, including Easy Virtue (1927), Downhill (1927), and other British films. Beginning in 1937, she also starred in a number of Hollywood productions such as Suspicion (1941), as well as in films such as Banana Ridge (1942), Gigi (1958), and A Breath of Scandal (1960). She died on September 4, 1985, in London, United Kingdom.
