An American actress, born on December 29, 1915 in Oakland, California. She established herself as a prominent dramatic actress on Broadway over several years and won the Tony Award in 1954. After her success on stage, director Elia Kazan introduced her to work on the silver screen in Hollywood, where she appeared in many films, such as East of Eden (1955), I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955), Cool Hand Luke (1967) and The Tenant (1976).
