His most important works include Sylvia Scarlett (1935), Merrily We Live (1938), Juarez (1939), and A Night to Remember (1942). He trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, which allowed him to stand on stage at nine. He studied in Birmingham, England, and at the age of 18, he presented his first work as a young man in the theater. He then began working in the West End Theatre in London. Aherne studied architecture at Malvern College, but his life as an actor got the better of him, so he returned to the theater again in 1923 at the Savoy Theatre in London. In the mid-thirties, he moved to Hollywood, and in 1940, he was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for the film Juarez (1939). He died in Venice, Florida, United States of America, on February 10, 1986, from heart failure.
