An Indian screenwriter, she wrote the screenplay for the film (Salaam Bombay!) in 1988, and the film (Mississippi Masala) in 1991. She is from West Bengal, India, and her family moved to the United States when she was two years old. She grew up in Rhode Island, the smallest state among the states, and the second most populous state after New Jersey. Lahiri studied at Barnard College and obtained a BA in English Literature. She then completed her graduate studies at Boston University, where she obtained an MA in English, Creative Writing, and Comparative Literature, and obtained a PhD in European Renaissance Studies. She then moved to the teaching profession at the same university and joined Rhode Island College, where she studied creative writing. After her marriage to (Alberto Forfolias-Bosch) in 2001, who works as a journalist and editor for Time magazine in Latin America and worked as the editor-in-chief of the same magazine, she moved to live with her husband in the Italian city of Rome and gave birth to her son (Octavio). In 2002, and her daughter (Nour) in 2005. In 2015, she began working at Princeton University, where she still teaches creative writing at the university’s Lewis Center for the Arts.
