An American film director of Hungarian origin, born in Budapest, Hungary. He served in the army during World War I, then made his way to Berlin, Germany, where he worked as an editor and assistant director for a German film company. In 1924, he immigrated to the United States and worked for several years as a choir singer in Broadway theaters, which enabled him to finance his project, an experimental short film entitled The Bridge in 1929. He then moved to MGM to co-direct his first feature film, Mask of Fu Manchu in 1932. He was famous during the silent film era but was not a prolific producer. His most notable films include The Swan in 1956, starring Grace Kelly, and the remake of A Farewell to Arms in 1957. He died in Vienna, Austria.
