French writer, novelist and actor, born on April 2, 1931, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, France. His family was persecuted for being Jewish, and he left school at the age of fourteen with only his primary school certificate. He began writing in 1973, recounting his childhood memories in his first novel, Un sac de billes, which was adapted into more than one film, most notably A Bag of Marbles (2017). He died on December 6, 2018 in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Alpes-Maritimes, France.
