A Canadian actor, born in New Westminster, Canada, and moved with his family to China, where his father worked as a commercial agent. When the family returned to Canada, he and his mother moved to Vallejo, California, USA, where she raised him with the help of her parents. He began his artistic career at the age of twelve with a financial company in Vancouver, Canada. He studied at Stanford, Columbia, and Chongqing Universities, and taught theater at Columbia University, USA. He was the director of the Pasadena Community Theater before the US Navy entered World War II. Among his most important artistic works in cinema are The Human Comedy (1943), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), and Battleground (1949).
