American actor born on June 1, 1905 in England. He is one of the most popular actors in the 1940's and early 1950's. He is the son of the painter Algernon Newton. He was educated at Lamorna near the Andes, Cornwall, where he lived With his family then at Exeter School and St. Bartholomew's School in Newbury, Berkshire. He made his acting debut at the age of 16 at the Birmingham Repertory Theater in 1921. He appeared in many shows until he went to Canada where he worked on a cattle farm for a year. Then returned to England and made several plays and various films. Among his works:The Desert Rats, Treasure Island and The High and the Mighty. He died on March 25, 1956 in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles of a heart attack.
