A German actress who was born in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. She received an Honorary Award from the German Film Awards in 1982. She is known for Sissi (1955), Sissi: The Young Empress (1956), Sissi: The Fateful Years of an Empress (1957), and Drei Frauen im Haus. After graduating from a Catholic school, she studied at a commercial college. She took lessons in ballet and acting at the Augsburg School of Music.
She stood on stage in Munich and Vienna, acted, sang, and presented her first film Boykott (1930). She married actor Wolf Albach-Retty and gave birth to her two kids Wolf-Dieter and Rosemarie (Romy Schneider). After her divorce, she returned to work in the cinema and theater and encouraged her daughter Rosemarie to become an actress. She died on 30 July 1996 in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany.
