Prior to becoming the magazine's fourteenth editor-in-chief in 1996, he served as a national affairs editor and political reporter. He was also the president and chief executive officer of the Aspen Institute before taking over as president of the board of directors and senior management of CNN in 2001. He wrote many biographies of figures such as Henry Kissinger, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, and Steve Jobs.
