An American writer and translator of autobiographies. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States. He studied history and literature at Harvard College and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1974. During his studies, he participated in the university's Signet Society before relocating to Pembroke College, Oxford, on a scholarship. The Sunday Times newspaper in London was where Walter started his journalism career. After that, he worked in several newspapers and joined Time magazine in 1978. Prior to becoming the magazine's fourteenth editor-in-chief in 1996, he served as a national affairs editor and political reporter. He was also the president and chief executive officer of the Aspen Institute before taking over as president of the board of directors and senior management of CNN in 2001. He wrote many biographies of figures such as Henry Kissinger, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, and Steve Jobs.
