An Irish stage and film actor, and a leading member of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. He began his career in insurance before turning to acting in 1929 in Dublin, and performed in numerous stage productions that toured in New York and England. His stage work led to prominent film roles, including two films by John Ford: The Informer (1936) and The Plough and the Stars (1936). He also appeared in Carol Reed's Odd Man Out (1947), playing a police inspector pursuing Irish revolutionary James Mason. His other notable films include The Mark of Cain (1947), The Fallen Idol (1948), Alfred Hitchcock's Under Capricorn (1949), Bad Lord (1959), and Esther and the King (1960).
