Biography

A French actor, born in Paris, as François Pillu. He won the BAFTA Award in 1957 for Best Foreign Actor for the film Gervaise (1956). He married three times and had three children. His credits include La Samourai (1967), Orpheus (1950), Gervaise (1956), and The Nights of Cabiria...Read more (1957). At the age of 14, he joined Le Cours Simon to study drama and the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique. His theatrical work allowed him to appear in some minor roles in cinema, and he had the opportunity to work with distinguished European directors. He reached the peak of his fame after World War II when he presented many classic films. When he began suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in 1991, he worked in radio until the mid-nineties, and when his illness became severe, he disappeared until he died on June 29, 2002, in Paris, as a result of a heart attack.
