A British writer, born to a Pakistani father and a British mother in southern England. He wrote several plays until his name became known among the public. He rose to fame after writing the play Outskirts (1981). Most of his works talk about the lives of immigrants and refugees in the UK, portraying their issues in a bold, hyper-realistic manner. He also famously wrote the film My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), as well as the autobiographical novel titled "The Buddha of Suburbia" (1990), which became a classic taught in British schools.
