A Greek actor, born in Cana, Crete, Greece. He began his career on the stage of his hometown, where he led a choir from 1925 to 1930, performing in Shakespearean plays such as The Merchant of Venice, King Lear, and Macbeth, and playing the lead role in Hamlet. He married the actress Katina Paxinou, and together they founded the Greek National Theatre. After moving to Hollywood in 1946, they appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious and The Chase, as well as in other films such as The Whistle at Lonesome Pine, Boy on a Dolphin, and Land of the Pharaohs. They returned to Greece in the 1950s, rejoined the National Theatre, and performed in international plays such as Hecuba, Oedipus Rex, and Medea.
