A British zookeeper, writer and TV presenter of English and Irish descent, born in Jamshedpur, India. In 1959, he founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo on the Channel Island of Jersey. He wrote a number of books based on his life as an animal collector and enthusiast, most notably "My Family and Other Animals". He was the younger brother of novelist Lawrence Durrell. Shortly before his father's death in 1928, the family moved to Britain and settled in the Upper Norwood area of Crystal Palace in south London.
He attended Wickwood School. The success of To Bafut with Beagles, along with his radio show Encounters with Animals, made Durrell a regular with the BBC Natural History Unit for decades. He's known for the series The Durrells (2016). He died on January 30, 1995 in Jersey, Channel Islands, UK.
