A German writer, born in Frankfurt, Germany. Her memoir about the war, The Diary of a Young Girl, is the base of many plays and films. She lived most of her life in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Although she was born in Germany, she lost her German citizenship in 1941. She gained international fame after publishing her memoir which contains her experiences in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II, after she and her family moved to the Netherlands in 1933 after the Nazis came to power in Germany. In 1940, the family became trapped in Amsterdam, and in July 1942, the family was forced to hide in some secret rooms in the building where Anne’s father worked due to persecution.
