An English actor, born in Cullercoats, North Tyneside, England, United Kingdom. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 1958 for Best Supporting or Featured Actor for his role in The Entertainer. He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1959 Queen's New Year Honours List for his services to drama. He married twice and had one son. His works include Ben-Hur (1959), The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953), The Ballet Girl (1916), and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1947).
He excelled in performing the classic plays of William Shakespeare starting in 1900, and he stood on stage in London for the first time playing the role of Hamlet in 1909. He served in the Royal Army during the First World War, and after the war, he returned to the theater in 1918 and received strong critical acclaim for his performance of the role of Hamlet. He played a distinguished role in the film Ben-Hur (1959) which was his last cinematic role. He died in Chelsea, London, England, United Kingdom on April 24, 1960.
